Growing Quality Fruit

Fruit is, by far, the most difficult of the crops to produce.

Whether you're growing blueberries, apples or persimmons, these little gems are expected to be perfectly shaped and beautifully ripened with juicy sweetness, each packed with their own unique flavour.

Minerals and Sugars

cherry tree blossomsPeople measure quality in fruit largely by how it LOOKS. They expect their fruit to look perfect and taste great. In order for fruit to look perfect and taste great, it must have remained disease and pest free...it must have been grown on a healthy plant. Plants are considered healthy when they contain high levels of minerals and sugars. This is because the availability of minerals and other nutrients helps a plant function at its highest levels with the ability to produce complex sugars, amino acids and complete proteins.  It is these compounds that help your plants build immunity to disease and build cell walls that are strong enough to stand up to insect attack.

A Stress-Free Life Means Prettier, Tastier Fruit

We know that fruit canes, vines, bushes and trees are perennial.  We also know that there's a real need to provide a steady supply of fertilizer to them not only during the growing season, but actually, all year long. Especially after the harvest when the plant or tree has exhausted all of its energy producing its fruit, its important to build nutrient reserves in the plants so that they can prepare for the next season's harvest.

Fruit Program

  • In the spring when the soil has warmed to about to around 14 degrees C, spray TrueBlend Soil Rejuvenator on the soil and on the fruit trees at a rate of 12 – 16 litres per acre, depending on nutrient requirements. Soil Rejuvenator should be diluted with enough water to spray 120 – 160 litres of solution per acre (a 10% solution).

Alternatively, if you are planting new fruit trees or bushes, drench after planting with 4-12 litres of our TrueBlend™ Starter solution, diluted to a 10% solution with water, depending on the size of the new plant and results of a soil analysis. Fruit plants of all types benefit from being drenched with a planting solution that provides a boost of nutrients to give the transplant what it needs to get a strong start.
  • Starting at 2 weeks after planting or from first true leaf, apply TrueBlend™ foliar solution once every 10-14 days until fruit set. Combine 7.5-10.5 litres of MaxMix or TrueBlend Foliar concentrate with 200ml of SafeStrike and mix in with enough water to spray 120-160 litres of solution per acre.

Our foliar solutions contain high quality ingredients to bring efficiency to your fertility program.  With nutrients, micro-nutrients and bio-stimulants, our MaxMix and TrueBlend foliars are perfectly blended to provide supplemental nutrition to your crops and keep the microbes well-fed and releasing a steady supply of plant-available nutrients to promote the highest quality fruit, the highest disease resistance, and the largest yields.

  • Apply TrueBlend™ foliar solution once every 10-14 days from fruit set until harvest.  Combine 7.5-10.5 litres per acre with 200ml of SafeStrike along with 2 litres of 8% liquid potassium, for a total concentrated mixture of 9.7-12.7 litres, diluted with enough water to spray 120-160 litres of solution per acre.

  • Fruits grown on our program typically have higher sugar levels, better storability, and better flavour. After harvest, spray TrueBlend Soil Rejuvenator on the soil at a rate of 12 – 16 litres per acre. Soil Rejuvenator should be diluted with enough water to spray 120 – 160 litres of solution per acre (a 10% solution).

This step is important to promote the decomposition of any fallen fruit that may harbor disease. Applying Soil Rejuvenator will give your microbes extra energy to build their numbers and devour crop residues faster - returning valuable nutrients to the soil, available to your trees to starting building for next year's growing season.

Fruits should be foliar fed once every 3 weeks from harvest to dormancy.

Due to the fact that fruit trees produce heavily, they demand heavy amounts of nutrients. You may notice that some varieties seem to only bear fruit every other year. Contrary to popular lore, this is not a varietal trait, but rather a result of the lack of adequate nutrient reserves available in the tree after the harvest which are necessary to develop the buds that will become next year's harvest. If your trees don't have enough nutrients stored up to develop buds, your yield the following year will reflect the deficiency from the previous year. This is why it is important to continue feeding your trees after the harvest, right up until dormancy.
